Mr. James A. Christopher, age 87, of Belmont, passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2010. He was a World War II veteran, retired U.S. postal worker, a Catholic Central graduate, and an all city football player. James was a lifelong resident of the Grand Rapids area, a devout Catholic who was a fan of Notre Dame Football, and a member of the Creston VFW Post #3023. He is survived by his loving and caring wife of 65 years, Irene (nee Dutkiewicz) and was preceded in death by his oldest son, Ron Christopher, son-in-law, Russ Scholten, grandson, Stephen VandeKerkhoff II, and brothers, Jack (Dorothy) Christopher and Gene House. He is also survived by his children and grandchildren, Jamie Zimmerman, Jenica, Patrick; Steve and Marcy Christopher, Aaron, Mary; Nancy and Mike Larsen, Christopher, Nicholas; Dan and Mary Christopher, Tim; Dennis Christopher, Hannah, Isaac; Cindy Scholten, Ian, Ryan, Danielle; Sharon Stack, Brian, Katie, Denny; Mary and Tom Thompson, Sabrina, Shannon, Josh; Carol and Brian Postma, Abby, James, Brian, Adam, Amanda; Diane Barton, Jason, Corey, Matt, Sarah, Stephanie; Terry and Lori Christopher, Brandon, Kayla; Ron Christopher, Jr.; and 30 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial for Mr. Christopher will be offered on Thursday morning at 11:00 a.m. at Assumption BVM Catholic Church, Belmont with The Rev. Peter Vu presiding. Military honors will be under the auspices of the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard with interment in Assumption Cemetery in Belmont. A Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the Pederson Funeral Home in Rockford where relatives and friends may meet the family from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday and prior to the Mass at the church on Thursday. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Missionary Consolata Sisters at Assumption BVM Catholic Church or God's Kitchen.
