Mr. Richard "Dick" DeYoung, age 57, of Grand Rapids, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 26, 2010. In 1970 he graduated from Creston High School where he participated in wrestling and track. While attending high school Dick worked at Pilgrim Manor and at Staal Buick. After high school, Dick attended Grand Rapids Community College. He worked at Evan's Product, then Good Steel from 1973 to 1998, and then ALRO Steel as a specialty steel salesman, retiring in 2008. He and his wife Sharon were a team, they bowled together, took trips to the casinos, trips to Grand Haven with a camera capturing the scenic beauty, and walks on the White Pine Trails. Just this past weekend, Dick and his son Craig took part in the Michigan State Barbecue cook-off, finishing 3rd place for veggies and 5th place for the potatoes. Dick competed in every single Michigan Ste Barbecue cook-off that has been held and the Chili cook-offs as well. He was a member of the Casino Club and Kansas City Barbecue Society. He is survived by his loving wife, the former Sharon Greenland whom he married on June 2, 1973; children, Richard Brian DeYoung II of Kansas City, MO, Craig Owen DeYoung of Grand Rapids; brother, Thomas (Pat) DeYoung; sister, Mary Beth and Frank Boder; aunts, uncles, and cousins; in-laws, Sandy and Dale Hunt and Terry Greenland, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Dick will be fondly remembered by friends and family, especially for his thoughtfulness and sense of humor.
