Mr. Robert DeYoung, age 89, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 15, 2010. He grew up on the northeast side of Grand Rapids, spent his young teenage years in Colorado, and then moved back with his family to Grand Rapids. Bob worked at Uncle Mel's Service and graduated from Central High School in 1939. He met his sweetheart, Lee when she was only nine years old. Back then, Lee knew that she was going to marry him. As young kids, they picked potato bugs together and were an item from their teenage years until their marriage on October 25, 1941. WWII came along, and Bob marched off to war to serve in the US Navy, leaving Lee and his daughter, Jacki. After returning from the service, Bob worked at Oliver Products, retiring in 1985 as Plant Manager. Bob liked fishing; and in the past they would travel to the Upper Peninsula during the summer so Bob could fish. He and Lee also spent time helping in Mexico at the School for the Deaf. When his grandchildren attended Baptist High School, Bob and Lee chaperoned a trip to 15 different countries in Europe in only 28 days. He is survived by his loving wife, Lee; children, Jacquelyn and John Kropf; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Shirley DeYoung; grandchildren, Sarah Williams, Rebecca and Robb Andrusiak, Paul DeYoung; his great-grandchildren, Heather, Rachael, Aaron, David, Madeline and Natalie. Bob was preceded in death by his son, Thomas DeYoung. Honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place.
